Our new set of chicks came on Wed.!!!
Woot and Squee!! It will be soo nice to have chickens again.
Caleb got 12 black Australorps, a breed listed as “recovering” by The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. He sold a goat and used that money to get chicks so he can sell eggs in the spring. Gabriella and ‘Liese got 2 golden laced Wyandottes each, Boo got one Golden Laced Wyandotte and one silver laced Wyandotte. The Wyandottes are also listed as recovering. The kids got all pullets, (girls).
I got 30 Delawares. They are an endangered heritage breed listed as critical by the ALBC, and have a lot of quality’s that we want. (I wanted to “do my part”)
They are heat and cold tolerant, and they will brood (set) their eggs. That means more chicks for us without having to order from the hatchery.
I ordered straight run meaning a mix of male and female, so we would have roosters to make more chicks, but also because the roosters make really nice fryers. Mmmmm.
When the chicks get here from the post office, they need to be taken out of their box and have their beaks dipped in sugar water, and then dipped in food. This is called “processing” The kids love to do this part. It is tricky because they can’t have their nose holes under the water for obvious reasons.
The chicks are destined to go in the barn to be brooded, but for today they are in our really messy garage/storage area. I wasn’t about to set the whole thing up, lugging stuff back an forth to the barn in the rain.
How exciting! The chick’s are so cute but the kids are even cuter! I need to get my fall chicks ordered too!
Tammy
You make it look so fun! Happy chicks and happy kids. 🙂
*snigger* in the last pic, the chicks are glowing….Holy McNuggets!
Way to go getting endangered chicken breeds. I’d been thinking lately that the world needs more variety of chicken. *nods wisely*
Kids are looking adoarable, as always. *ahem* Handsome, in Caleb’s case. 😛
ROFL Paige, as always you make me smile. xoxo
Thanks to KC for the comments it is fun!!
So glad to see you Tammy!
Especially like that shot from the chick’s perspective. Such warm light. Should be comfortable for them there, in that light, with so many welcoming hands.
